"The Phantom of Retroland" is the first segment of the 8th episode of season 1.

Plot[]

It is show-and-tell day in Ms. Fowl's classroom. Jimmy brings in a mini model of Foucault's pendulum while telling the class about the physicist. Nick is up next and tells a tale about the Phantom of Retroland, a ghost monster who lives at the local amusement park and looks for victims to eat after dark around midnight. In the interest of science, Jimmy sets out to disprove this urban myth with the help of his reluctant friends Carl and Sheen. Jimmy activates his hologram projector to make an image of him in bed sleeping, but after he sneaks away, it malfunctions causing the hologram image to change to Jimmy playing limbo on the school playground, and his parents go out to find him when they find out about it.

Once he and Goddard meet up with Carl and Sheen, the four of them enter Retroland. They meet the Phantom, who turns out to be Nick in disguise, followed by another Phantom who turns out to be Cindy and Libby in disguise to punish Jimmy for his know-it-all behavior. But then as they are all leaving, a third phantom shows up, this one with a glowing skull face, Jimmy confronts said "phantom" saying the joke's over, and pulls off his cloak--only to reveal a glowing bony body! Jimmy and and his friends scream in terror and flee out of the park. This Phantom then turns out to be Judy accompanied by Hugh who were there to teach Jimmy a lesson about using his hologram projector to sneak out after bedtime. But just as they're about to leave, the real phantom rises out of the ground, this one translucent and glowing purple, sending the two parents running and screaming in terror (and ending with zooming into Hugh's screaming mouth.)

Quotes[]

Jimmy: Glad you could make it, Sheen. How did you sneak out?
Sheen: Oh, I just told my grandma that I had to go to a deserted theme park to be eaten by a maniac. She told me to wear clean underwear.
Jimmy: Let's hop the fence.
Carl: Hop the-- (misunderstands what Jimmy said) Oh, gee, sorry, I can't, Jim. You know, some people can't whistle, some people can't snap their fingers. Well, I can't hop. So, darn it, I guess I'll have to go home. Bye. (He starts to leave, but Jimmy stops him)
Jimmy: (slightly annoyed) It's an expression, Carl. We're going through the fence, thanks to my oxidation accelerator. (pulls out the can of rust accelerator) Viola. The equivalent of 200 years of rust. (sprays the fence with the rust accelerator, creating a hole big enough for them to walk through)

Sheen: I wonder what order he'll eat us in.
Jimmy: He's kidding, Carl. No one's gonna eat us.

Phantom #3: Ah, leaving so soon, huh? (Carl screams as the Phantom sniffs) What's that smell?
Sheen: You mean (points to Phantom #3) your salami leg, (points to Cindy and Libby) their salami leg, (points to Nick) his salami leg, or Carl's shoes? (points to Carl's shoes)
Jimmy: All right. Whoever you are, the joke's over. (He pulls the phantom's cloak off, but the rest of the body looks just as ghostly and menacing as the face and head. He, Carl, Sheen, Nick, Cindy, and Libby scream and run out of the theme park)
Carl: Jimmy, what about science!?
Jimmy: Science schmience! Run for your lives!

Jimmy: Every thinking person knows the phantom's just a fable.
Cindy: Oh, obsess, why don't you? You're only putting down Nick. Because despite all your logic, you're just as scared of the phantom as everyone else.
Nick: No kid who goes to Retroland after midnight has ever been seen again.
Jimmy: That- Th-That is so patently ridiculous, it doesn't even deserve-
Cindy: A what? A 600-page report on how ridiculous it is in French?
Nick: So, Neutron, I guess you wouldn't be afraid to go to the park at midnight, you know, say if I was to, uh, triple-dog dare you?
Carl: Don't do it, Jimmy! With you dead, I'll be picked last in volleyball!
Jimmy: Fine. I'll go tonight. And I'll be in class tomorrow, completely unharmed.
Nick: How will we know you were really there?
Jimmy: Because I'll take Sheen and Carl as witnesses.
Carl: Sheen, the phantom of Retroland's gonna rip us limb from limb and eat us. Say something!
Sheen: You ever notice how Jimmy's hair is like one of those gum massager things? It's all swirly and-- (realizes what Jimmy and Carl just said and looks shocked) WHAT?!

Carl: (reading his letter to Jimmy, whose words he has mostly misspelled) Dear Jimmy, I can’t come with you tonight, as I have decided to join the French Foreign Legion. This is a decision I do not make lightly as I ha-- (stops when he sees Jimmy looking slightly annoyed at him). Hi, Jimmy. I thought you said 11:30.
Jimmy: Well, you'd have surely been a plane to Algeria by then, Carl.

Trivia[]

  • Nick triple dog daring Jimmy is a reference to A Christmas Story.
  • One of Jimmy's criticisms of Nick's story is of "Billy's last words". However, Nick did not mention any of the kids' names nor did he allege any hearsay ("the last words").
  • The Pendulum ride is a reference to the Edgar Allan Poe poem "The Pit and the Pendulum".
  • Despite Libby having a role in this episode, she has no spoken dialogue. (When Libby and Cindy were disguised as the Phantom, Cindy did the voice, as evidenced by the end credits stating Carolyn Lawrence, Cindy's voice actress, voiced "Phantom 2".)
  • When the first Phantom chases after Jimmy, Carl, and Sheen, he is seen floating above the ground as he goes after them, and hovers in front of the pendulum ride after the three boys initially start it up. We later learn this Phantom was actually Nick in disguise, so how was he able to float and hover above ground if he wasn't really the Phantom?
  • This and My Son, the Hamster were produced between "Raise the Oozy Scab"/"I Dream of Jimmy" and "See Jimmy Run"/"Trading Faces".
  • The third Phantom the kids encounter has a glowing face, and when his cloak is removed, his body glows as well. The glowing effect fades after this "Phantom" unmasks to reveal Judy, and how she pulled off the glowing is never shown or explained.
  • The voice Frank Welker uses for the real Phantom at the end is the same voice he uses for Dr. Claw from Inspector Gadget, Soundwave from Transformers, Rajah, Abu, and the Cave of Wonders from Disney's Aladdin and Darkseid from Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show.
  • This episode is similar to the Scooby-Doo franchise, when the kids get chased by the Phantom, catch him' and then find out it was just a person in disguise.
  • Jimmy didn't question how Retroland could have existed in '97, when it really opened up in 2001
  • This is one of the few episodes to not end with an atom-shaped iris out; instead, it ends with Hugh running from the Phantom into the camera with his screaming mouth overtaking the entire screen with black.
  • This is the first holiday-themed episode, and the first one that is Halloween-themed.
  • This is the final 11 minute episode released on VHS.
  • These are the reasons why everyone dressed up as the phantom:
    • Nick: To scare Jimmy, Sheen, and Carl.
    • Cindy and Libby: To get back at Jimmy for ruining Nick's class report.
    • Judy: To teach Jimmy a lesson for sneaking out after bedtime.

Animation Errors[]

  • In the school hallway, as Nick walks up to Jimmy, he points his finger in his face causing Jimmy to tilt his head back. This in turn, makes most of Jimmy's hair phase through the lockers behind him for a brief moment. This was likely the result of an oversight by the animators, who put Jimmy's reference model too close to the lockers as they were animating him.
